Beaches are not just for sunbathing on, as any surfer will tell you. Especially in Sri Lanka, one of the most reliable surf destinations in the Indian Ocean. Since the early 60`s Sri Lanka attracts surfers from all over the world.
The best surf points in Sri Lanka are located on the South and East Coast with Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay being the busiest, but there are many `secret spots` like Unawatuna, Ahangama, Weligama, Mirissa or Yala where you still can find uncrowded surf.
While there is a surf season in the South of Sri Lanka (November - April) and one in the East (May - October) you still can find a good swell outside the official seasons as long as you are flexible and listen to local advice. Scuba diving in Sri Lanka is vastly rewarding off the northwest coast, south coast from Bentota right down to Yala and the east coast in Trincomalee. However, many reefs are offshore and you often need a boat and a guide to get to the best dive spots. Sri Lanka is also very popular for shipwreck diving. The monsoon weather patterns in Sri Lanka ensure that one half of the island`s coastal waters are always in season for diving, snorkelling, and swimming with good underwater visibility which ranges from about 50 to 100 feet.
The best diving spot located in West Coast are Beruwala, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Weligama, Negambo and Kalpitiya.
The best and safe diving duration is November to May in this West Coast. Trincomalee, East Coast: April through October is the best time to dive.There are several dive sites here including Swami Rock, Eel Rock, Sitanampara, Coffin Ray Point and Pigeon Rock to name a few.
Numerous species of marine life including Sting Rays, Moray Eels can be spotted here. Some of ship wreck which is located these sites and exotic species of fish and worth exploring.

The ever smiling, mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will nonchalantly glide past you, when you embark on a whale/ dolphin watching excursion off the Southern, Eastern or the West coast of Sri Lanka. The ideal locations for whale watching would be Dondra Point (accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa) and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of dolphins.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guards had increased their vigilance in monitoring the implementation of Sea Mammals Observation, Regulation and Control Regulations.
To ensure that the Regulations are adhered to by boat operators and tourists engaged in whale watching, the members of the Rohana Coast Guard base had been observing whale and dolphin watching activities in Mirissa since last year. The coast guards also make sure that the boat operators; crew and the tourists abide the safety precautions and regulations before and during their tour of observation.

Primates such as common langurs, endemic macaque, purple faced leaf monkey and shaggy bear monkey roam amidst the woods in huge troops.
